Retail & Service Jobs 14- and 15-Year-Olds May Do

  • Work of an intellectual or artistically creative nature
  • Cooking with electric or gas grills that does not entail cooking over an open flame
  • Work as a Lifeguard or Swimming Instructor at a swimming pool if at least 15 years of age and properly certified.

    Processing ordinarily means an operation in which goods undergo a change in form or substance. Examples include laundering performed by commercial laundries and dry-cleaners, cleaning and filleting fish, dressing poultry, and cracking nuts.

    14- and 15-year-olds are not allowed to operate most power-driven equipment, including motor vehicles such at golf carts and ATVs. They are also prohibited from operating power-driven food grinders, slicers and mixers; lawn mowers, weed-whackers, and trimmers. The regulations specially allow 14- and 15-year-olds to operate office machines such as paper shredders normally used in office operations.

    Such youth are not allowed to perform any jobs on an actual construction site.
