Hours that 14 and 15 Year-Olds May Work

  • No more than 3 hours on a school day, including Fridays
  • No more than 18 hours during a week when school is in session
  • No more than 8 hours on a non-school day
  • No more than 40 hours during a week when school is not in session
  • 14 and 15 year-olds may work up to 3 hours on a school day. This includes Friday if it is a school day.
  • When school is in session, minors age 14 and 15 may not work more than 18 hours in a week. This is true even if school is out during part of the week.
  • School is in session in any week that the school meets, even if only a portion of one day.
  • On Saturdays and Sundays and on other days when school is not in session (including summer or spring breaks) 14 and 15 year-olds may work up to 8 hours a day.
  • In any week in which school is not in session at all, minors age 14 and 15 may work as many as 40 hours in a week. Reg. 570.35

    • The hours restrictions are designed to not only keep kids safe, but to preserve their educational opportunities.
